I'm afraid that we also spell "terrain" the same way.

Terrane is a geological term (although it may have been used incorrectly on the crossword puzzle) .

Or it may not. Terrane as '"a related group of rock formations" would define karst.

According to some history wags, we can cite Noah Webster and his dictionary as a big part of the reason Brit and American English is so different. He apparently believed words should be spelled closely to how they sounded. More importantly, he believed America should have its distinct culture and language. So, he set about to make the US language different than the mother tongue.
