40 foot sinkhole opens under woman's bed (Guatemala City)

Story here-

Wow, that was close!
:yikes:

Interesting how perfectly round it is, and how it goes straight down. Almost looks like a well.

Sounds like this is the same area where that monster sinkhole appeared in 2010-

Letting the days go by / water flowing underground
Into the blue again / in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones / there is water underground.

Are those bricks lining the hole?

I was wondering the same thing. Looks like 5 or 6 layers of brick towards the top.

The picture looks fake. The edge looks too perfect and sharp around the perimeter as if it was photoshopped.

The tiles are probably grouted or strongly attached by another means to the floor, so a hole opening beneath the tiles would cause them to snap off without cracking the surrounding tile. In the other picture of the big sinkhole the asphalt on the street cuts off pretty sharply.

The story is a bit of unspeakable nonsense. Whether or not the photo is real, the premise is surely a fabrication.

There are a couple of possibilities that I've seen thrown around. One is that this is an old well that had been sealed off that collapsed. This explains the bricks and roundness, but I'm not sure a 40 hole in a city bedded by volcanic ash would produce a well. Another thing someone mentioned is that the people investigating may have cleaned off the rough edges from the tiles to get a better sense of what was going on. I will admit there is a bit of fishiness about the whole thing.

Can anyone explain why the bulb in the foreground appears to be emitting cool light, yet the illumination is a warm glow? Here's another picture in which the bulb looks different.

Does look doctored up. If it was a capped well, it had a microthin cap. Obviously drainage or a cistern if the picture is real. Note the pipe in the picture located near the top of the brick lined shaft. LukeM has the picture link in his post.

I'm assuming in this part of the world that tile is put directly on the ground without any flooring or foundation under it

An admitted first world thinker I am. What choice do I have? I'm also a flooring installer. It is possible that the tiles were set on a couple of inches of cement poured over the obvious multiple layers of brick. Possible.
Is it possible that a naturally occuring sinkhole happened to be lined with brick? The bricks go round the hole, they aren't broken off like the tiles or jutting out here and there.
Is that guy measuring a 40' hole with a 9' tape? :big grin:

We can solve this whole thing real easy. Somebody run down there and rappel down. If theres fantastic virgin cave at the bottom then we got a sink in the bedroom. If its brick lined and got water in it then i reckon we can call it a well. If we don't find anything we can call it photo shopped.

Here a few years back a guy was about to get in his truck to go to go to work and fell in a 20 ft deep sink in his front yard. Said he landed in water and there was passage in the bottom. Soon as the Fire dept got him out the county came in and filled it up.

...how do you fall down a hole that big? Texting while walking?

The Guatemala one does look a bit perfect how those tiles are...perfectly rounded and not broken or anything...

Rebelfirefighter's second link's photo shows the alleged sinkhole to have heavy equipment teeth marks on its sides. Or were they made by Johnson's desperate attempts to claw his way out of the pit? :tonguecheek:
