Multicellular life discovered deep underground

Postby JR-Orion » Jun 1, 2011 12:35 pm

"Worms from hell" found nearly one mile underground. OK, this is more mine than cave related, but here's some interesting info on a new extremophile.

Never know what you might find down there.

At least they are small critters.
:yikes:
Letting the days go by / water flowing underground
Into the blue again / in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones / there is water underground.

I got to introduce that guy at the monthly NIST colloquium when he came and gave a talk on (unicellular) microbes found in the bottom of diamond mines in S. Africa.

I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that--on this planet, anyway--if:

1.) There is a source of chemical energy, or a way to create chemical energy in an environment

2.) Organic molecules can remain stable within that environment

Then life will be found there. :exploring:

Okay now that is freakin' sweet. I wish I still got Nature, I should sign up for it again. I laughed at the part where Nature wouldn't accept the name "Worms from Hell" as the title. Congrats to them too! Nature is a top journal, very awesome. That just made some careers if they weren't made already :D
