Ile de la Gonave

Does any body have any experience caving or knowledge of caves on Ile de La Gonave, Haiti?

Thanks Phil. Tried that, but all I kept getting were links to groundwater studies. Unfortunately, the network I'm on blocks quite a bit of info (no, I'm not in China!). I'll check it out.

Alas, no info on Ile de la Gonave except a picture of the karst areas.

Can you navigate the entire site? Why not contact that Olivier guy or the photographer?

The island is in the news now, too.

I've worked (cave-wise) in Haiti for the past 3 years, most recently last October, but not on Gonave - it certainly must have caves as there was some USGS research done there on karst groundwater. The French have fielded several expeditions to Haiti - not sure if they went there. Haiti has lots of caves and potential for discovery of much more - even some depth potential. Obviously, it will be difficult to work there until there is some recovery from the earthquake.

Thanks Pat! Gonave is just an idea right now. There are definitely caves there, I've seen photos of the flank margin caves on the west end of the island. There is certainly potential for normal cave development in the upland karst as well. I've contacted John Mylroie regarding the area, but he hasn't been there yet either. This might be a worthwhile location to scout out!

Hi Dave, Haiti should be more investigated from a caving point of view, as Pat already wrote.

Before our preliminary expediton in september, I began a bibliographical search on the caves of haiti, and I have identified 10 cave names in La Gonâve from 3 sources, but without any location or description.
No caving research has been done there. The island is karstic, so no doubt you will find caves.

However, the earthquake changed a lot of things in the country, and now is maybe not the best time to go there.

Caves have been documented that are definitely fluvio-karst in nature associated with the mountainous areas of the country. Even under the most optimal conditions in Haiti, it is not an easy place to work because of infrastructure, political instability, and other issues. The earthquake has definitely complicated things on all levels. pk
