The Mulu Season Approacheth!

The Mulu Season Approacheth!
The StarGate begins to rumble!
With lips all wet to swallow!
Spelunkers who there do stumble!

Whilst deep beyond, her vastness
Is stirring as if to wake
For a time when us mere mortals
Her surveys will come to make

Yet do not tread there lightly
Midst her beauty so untamed
That longs for all true cavers
Who come to spread her fame

Secret StarGate we beseech thee
For not a year yet still to wait
Command your waters sternly
And open thy Entrance Great

Never heard of Websters Rivers?
Or her streams and lakes that try?
To protect her all her wonders?
That would not but were they dry?

She is Majesty and Mystery!
Both a Beauty and a Beast!
And of all her virgin splendors!
Be there none as in the East!

That her jewels in untold measure
Should but by Grace be made let known
So carefully placed He the Creator
A fortress base of vaulted stone

Virgin Caverns 'yond the StarGate
In our dreams we hear your cry
And if 'ere we cross your doorsteps
To us will be no higher high

Mighty Webster, Now she's calling!
Any hear her siren song?
Heed, for should the StarGate open,
Passage shan't be had for long!

I have to admit, that poem sort of turned me on!

So is this why you don't dive the sump?

Since it opens up every once in a while, do you feel it is not right to dive the sump because you really don't have too if you wait? By the way, I love the poem. :caver:

Diving the Sump

Postby worldnaut » Oct 16, 2006 4:26 pm

The problem is the logistics of getting the dive equipment to the face of the sump. If you've never been to Webster, you might have missed some of the subtle references to the challenging conditions in the cave. For some, just carting their own hide in and back out teeters on the edge of cave trip turning into rescue mission. If we had a team of 8 willing to cart the gear to the face of the sump and back out we could do the dive. At a very minimum, I think I could get agreement that the difficulty rating of making distance in Webster is at least a factor of 2. The "Death March" moniker we tease Chris with does have a very real foundation in the actual conditions in the cave.
