Four Kings (more walking or crawling)

Postby bennettbike » Dec 22, 2013 10:01 am

My friend and I are taking 4 couples caving, it has to be Pigeon Mountain. Its the closest because of time. We are both sort of done with Pettijohns but it always works so well for new cavers. So how is Four Kings? If Andersons Springs drains enough by Dec 29 i may grab all my wet suites.

Mostly crawling. At least what I saw of it is. The biggest newbie cave in that area is Ulla, and it's probably totally sumped till next summer. I imagine Anderson will be very wet for a while, what with all the rain we just had.
Keep in mind if you go caving anywhere in the Pigeon Mt. management area you will need a permit. http://www.georgiawildlife.com/Georgia-Outdoor-Recreational-Pass

I put up a post about 4k a while back. It is very tight mostly crawling. There is a waterfall in the back that requires a belly slide to access. It should have water considering all of the rain. Anderson springs is much better but with all of the rain may be sumped. Ulla requires a permit and should be accessed by an experienced caver and or guide due to it's formations. I've personally never been to ulla. I've been on two different permits as it was sumped both times. It's still on my list.

Most everything else of any size in that area is vertical. That being said, there is a fair amount of horizontal passage in Ellison's before you reach the Warm-up Pit, as well as going into the Historical Ent.

If you weren't limited to Pigeon Mt. you could go over to Fox Mt.-several good caves in that area that would be good for less experienced folks.

what else is over on Fox Mt that would be good for beginners? I've never been to Byers, but I hear it is not exactly an easy cave. The rest I know have vertical entrances.

Now that you mention it, there's not much on Fox Mt. proper that would be suitable for beginners. Byers is a bit tough, and requires at least one or more handlines. I guess I was thinking of other caves in the general area-Howard's Waterfall, Talley, and further down the road is Steward Springs.

I also thought of Hurricane, which is "closed". Although I heard some little birds saying the reason it is closed is not as bad as they would lead you to believe.

There are a couple of caves just north of Rusty's that look a little interesting. Have you been to all of them on the preserve?

well, i ended up taking the group to Tumbling Rock. That was a great first cave trip for them. aside from the over population of humans on a sunday.
