enlarging devices work either by mechanical force such as a sledgehammer/chisel, or by chemical force such as explosives. since effective enlarging of cave passages is a highly desirable product, many enlarging devices or their method of application are closely held trade secrets. Some methods may not be approved by local regulatory agencies....

How does an "enlarging device" work, does it scrape rock off the sides or is it a jack of some sort? It seems difficult to do either.

It makes a loud noise and removes lots of rock.

It's a can of concentrated water, super saturated with carbonic acid, where one 12 oz can releases the amount of water tens of thousands of years would take to naturally deliver. ;) or, a "kaboom" device :)
