Hipple Cave, PA: video trip report

Postby brettrj » Apr 8, 2006 11:33 pm

Here's a link to some clips I took last weekend in Hipple Cave...

... it's a former commercial cave which has been shuttered since 1940 but is accessible with permission, located in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Thanks for sharing! Very nice video and I wouldnt mind seeing more.

Too bad about the vandalism in the cave though. It just breaks my heart to see things like that.

Apparently Quicktime is getting fussy about who can and cannot download the clips. I have Quicktime (free version) but gotten an error message when I clicked on the first and second clip link and had to shut down my browser twice (Firefox). Is there another way?

I had to get out of Firefox and download them with IE. I wouldnt try to just play it from the site though. Download it straight to your PC and save it to your hdd, then play it from your pc.

Hipple clips...

Postby brettrj » Apr 18, 2006 9:04 pm

If you view them through the browser they look kinda funky. I've tried compressing them in the mpeg format but the quality is just not as good.

My camcorder is on lower end of the consumer spectrum so even though I compress the clips at the highest quality level they still come out blotchy when you stretch the window out. I believe that even with this camcorder the results would be much better with HID lighting units. The more clean, daylight temp light you can throw on the subject the better the camera can record. If one was to combine these lights with even just a 3 CCD consumer camcorder the results would be phenomenally better. It's really just a matter of how much you can afford and what you're willing to take underground.

I plan on including much more dialog and back-story in future efforts as well as more polished presentation in general. Still learning.

aah so that was you doing the narration? I thought part one was pretty quiet during the first part, but found your dialogue in the second and third parts very informative. Good job!

Cool video! I enjoyed the vicarious caving experience. :kewl: You should enter it in the NSS video salon! http://www.caves.org/committee/salons/Video.shtml

BTW, I had no problems watching it on line via Firefox and Quicktime (the free version), and the quality was good.
