Bat Hibernacula Inventory and 3D Cave Mapping Project, North Rim Grand Canyon (30 January – 04 February 2012)

White-Nose Syndrome has resulted in an unprecedented decline in many bat species in the eastern US and Canada. This epidemic is perhaps the greatest tragedy to North American wildlife populations. With Geomyces descructans, the fungus that causes WNS moving westward, conservation biologists and land managers are bracing for this impending threat. Our objectives of this two year project are to monitor one known bat hibernacula and one non-hibernacula cave to compare habitat requirements of these caves as part of a baseline study to characterize cave roosting bat hibernacula habitat in northern Arizona. Understanding the habitat requirements of bat hibernacula will provide land managers with the information necessary to make the best management decisions under a WNS paradigm.

We are seeking 2 field technicians to assist in this effort on Grand Canyon’s north rim. This work is supported by the National Park Service. Our objectives for this fieldwork will be to: (1) monitor two known bat hibernacula through censusing hibernating bats for the second year; (2) map a non-hibernacula cave using 3-D mapping techniques and collect data to plot locations of all instruments in 3D space; (3) upload data from temperature and relative humidity instruments currently deployed in the non-hibernacula cave; and, (4) follow to WNS decontamination protocols while in the backcountry.

General Schedule:
30 January: Travel to Saint George, UT (hotel stay)
31 January - 03 February: Fieldwork
03 February: Return to Saint George (hotel stay)
