The Northeast Regional Organization of the NSS has twice-yearly weekend campout gatherings each spring and fall. General info and past events are listed on the website at
http://www.caves.org/region/nro/meetings_nro.html The spring NRO event is usually in May but location and dates don't usually start emerging until well into the new year. Quebec cavers often come down too.

If you can make it, I would highly recommend attending the NRO like Jansen suggested. I think it's going to be in Vermont this Spring - so a bit of a hike from our area. However, you'll have plenty of opportunities to be guided on trips and learn from other people. If I'm there we could meet up and do something fun.
