caving in Jamaica

Postby akunkle99 » Mar 15, 2011 5:30 pm

Hello,

My wife and I are traveling to Jamaica in June. We'd like to do some cave exploring while we are there, probably with a local guide. However, June is the rainy season in Jamaica. Does anyone know if there are any caves in Jamaica that are reasonably safe during the rainy season?

Thanks,
Andy

Yep, lots. Many caves are located in the karst towers of cockpit country, as they were formed before the cockpits deepened to their present location. The wet ones that you want to avoid are typically accessed thru the present cockpit bottoms. Check out the excellent book Jamaica Underground http://www.fincham.co.uk/Caves/JUadvt.html and contact the Jamaica Caves Organization http://www.jamaicancaves.org/ headed by a Canadian.

Just got back from Jamaica myself a few days ago.
