Fang Cave Complex
The park is located in the Hart Ranges of the Canadian Rockies
Fang Cave is 3342m making it the 14th Longest cave in Canada and the 18th deepest at 247m.
The trail to those caves is not for the inexperienced or unfit, as it is a 3km vertical hike with steady elevation gains all the way up the trail. there are great views from the top at the lakes. the upper cave entrance is accessed from the river that flows into the complex and can be explored fairly easily on foot depending on water levels.
If you are planning to explore more than the upper portion of the cave you will need all the appropriate climbing gear. there is another entrance into the lower chamber but this also requires gear to get into.
We entered both cave entrances and explored a fair portion of the cave, one highlight was a 20m or so waterfall at the very back of the upper cave section which required some Rope work to descend which we were able to do and explore, we repelled down into the second chamber or (Queens Coliseum) which is a fairly large room. There is another passage off of the coliseum that descends around the 70m mark, this again required more rope work and protection. Time did not allow us to explore further but it was a very enjoyable experience and we are planning a return trip in the near future.
This is a slide show I put together from our 2008 trip.
Hope you enjoy it!
