I would highly recommend getting training with them and learning with others.
A lot of stuff that you see in books doesn't fully make sense until you've done it "for real".
Try first in your backyard and then later in a cave situation.
Also, when possible, try to learn WHY certain things work better than others.
For example, a 12:1 haul system may sound great... 'Look, I can lift them by myself!' but in practice, it's probably extremely impractical and probably won't move a patient any easier than say a 4:1.
(for one thing, sometimes books, etc. tend to use those mythical frictionless pulleys and massless ropes. I still can't find those on eBay.
I will say though it's fun in a geeky sort of way when you set up a nice complex 4:1 haul system on your back deck and it collapses "perfectly" (i.e. make sure the one leg is 2x the other). Of course in a cave I'm sure I'm not going to find nice posts on 8' center, but hey, a guy can dream.
