Excellent books, all of them. I would add that for a frame of reference on the techniques in these books, and learning how to use them with a group, you can't beat training offered through the National Cave Rescue Commission, which is a sub-organization within the NSS. Some of what's in technique books won't really make sense until you've held it in your hands and used the real equipment and worked with other people to achieve results. You can go to http://www.ncrc.info to get started.

Shame shame... no urls.:-)

NCRC main page

I would highly recommend getting training with them and learning with others.

A lot of stuff that you see in books doesn't fully make sense until you've done it "for real".

Try first in your backyard and then later in a cave situation.

Also, when possible, try to learn WHY certain things work better than others.

For example, a 12:1 haul system may sound great... 'Look, I can lift them by myself!' but in practice, it's probably extremely impractical and probably won't move a patient any easier than say a 4:1.

(for one thing, sometimes books, etc. tend to use those mythical frictionless pulleys and massless ropes. I still can't find those on eBay. :-)

I will say though it's fun in a geeky sort of way when you set up a nice complex 4:1 haul system on your back deck and it collapses "perfectly" (i.e. make sure the one leg is 2x the other). Of course in a cave I'm sure I'm not going to find nice posts on 8' center, but hey, a guy can dream.

ANY SPECIFICS? LIKE 2:1, 3:1, 4:1 piggybacks ETC? the liks that every one gave you are pretty good links. Like others have said practice before using them. the more complex the system the more diffictult it can be if you don't understand mechanical advantages. Watch your achor points and your weights. you don't want to build a system that will rip your anchors out or exceed your safe working load of your rope.

I highly recommend anything by Ken Laidlaw. He did the "vertical rigging workshops" at my NCRC.
