NCRC weeklong - rack requirements?

Postby chrismc » Mar 26, 2008 1:16 pm

So I think I've conned, er, convinced a couple friends from the local fire dept to come down to Alabama for the weeklong this year. I'm helping them out with a gear list, and we came to the issue of rappel racks. Their standard department racks are aluminum, which isn't so popular among cavers. I *recommended* they invest in some stainless steel racks, but what is the official stance? Will they be able to use their aluminum racks on NCRC rope?

Thanks!

This is the only "official" requirements that I know of:
(from NCRCBrochure2008.pdf)
DESCENT DEVICE
Any of the following four devices are acceptable:
1. A standard rack
2. A three-bar Micro rack with a hyper-bar (4 bars total)
3. A bobbin-type descender with off-set or safety carabiner
4. A “Rescue Eight” with ears

Nothing mentions steel or aluminum.

They should be fine with what they have (as long as they know how to use them).

Aluminum bars are fine.
