Rio Camoy - Rockfall Death, 5 Jan. 2008?

Postby Ray Keeler » Feb 8, 2008 3:05 pm

Does anyone know anything else about this Jan. 5, 2008 incident? It sounds like it was on the Rio Camoy tourist trails. I'm looking for confirmation and additional information.

thanks,

Go Underground at the Rio Camuy Caves Park
Posted by Gwenn December 2, 2007UPDATED February 8, 2008: It was just announced by the Department of Natural Resources that the caves will be re-opened to the public beginning February 15, 2008. Previously, the caves had been closed to the public since January 5, 2008 when a woman from California died after being hit by a falling rock while visiting the cave system. This was the first tragic accident to occur at the Park since it opened to the public. The Park was closed while they investigated what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again in the future.

"To a month and several days of the closing of the Park of the Caverns of the River Camuy because of an incident that charged the life of a tourist, the Company of National Parks (CPN) announced that the attraction will reopen its doors the next one 15 of February. Ramón Snows, director of the CPN, indicated that, after the incident registered last January 5, some have been invested $150.000 in improvements to the park and measures to guarantee more the security of the visitors."

"We are taking some measures of security in the Cave Clara and, once this be reopened to the public, the Cave Clara is going to be one of the surest systems of caverns than can have", assured the official.

"the access to the Park of the Caverns of the River Camuy will be free and will open from Friday to Sunday, until March first. From that date should operate full-time."
