OCR Orientation to Cave Rescue

Postby karsthuntr » Sep 4, 2007 4:05 pm

Hello all,

This is a reminder that September 29 and 30 of 2007 will be a large scale training and mock exercise near Laurel Caverns in southwestern PA. About 25 miles northeast of Morgantown, WV. Camping will be free of charge for participants and students at Laurel Caverns on Friday and Saturday nights.

The event is being sponsored by the Eastern Region of the National Cave Rescue Commission, Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, Mountaineer Area Rescue Group, and Fayette County Search and Rescue.

Cave Part:

ER-NCRC will be having a Orientation to Cave Rescue Course that will start Friday evening and go through Sunday afternoon. This is a regular OCR course where you will learn throughout the course numerous things about cave rescue such as Patient Packaging, Litter Movement, Communications, ICS, Medical, etc.. The cost for this course is $40.00. Further information and
registration information is available on the ER-NCRC webpage at http://www.er-ncrc.org under training.

Surface Part:

While the cave rescue OCR class is taking place there will be a large scale mock exercise. This will mostly take place on Saturday but there will be multiple interactions with the OCR course including a large Sunday part. This is a great time for regular search and rescue to work together with cave rescue so that both will be better able to work together during actual missions. Opportunities will be available for SAR individuals to participate in almost all aspects of the OCR training including a mock cave rescue.

The surface mock will be designed to be very dynamic in nature so that it will work with 10 individuals or 100. The more individuals that we have means the more advanced that we will be able to go up to and including technical evacuation scenarios.

If you are a caver that has had the OCR course in the past you are welcome to come out and participate in this mock training exercise. One way to keep up your skills is to become involved in Surface Search and Rescue. What many cavers do not realize is that many highly trained cave rescue folks belong to their local Search and Rescue Group so that they can keep there rescue skills up to date and be better prepared to assist in the rescue of "you" the caver. Since cave rescues do not happen that often it is imperative that individuals keep up their skills through multiple methods.

We really want EVERYONE that is interested to show up at this event. This will be the first time that a large scale mock will be done involving multiple aspects of surface and cave rescue components.

For further information on either part of this mock please contact Bru Randall at: caverbru@aol.com

Mmmmmmm...

It would have been nice if someone had told me about this sooner so I could have put it in the previous issue of the West Virginia Caver.

The next issue comes out in Oct.

I'm trying to put that issue to bed this week, and it is TIGHT for space.

The next issue I really have room in is Dec.

But, if I'd known sooner, I could have got it in the Oct issue somehow.

Where are you going your mock for the Snowshoe one? Sharps?

How about sending me a short blurb on the Snowshoe seminar, and I will try to stick it in.

I will at least put something in the Cavin' Calender.

I cannot tell you which cave we will be using for the mock (finding the cave and which cave is part of the scenario:)). Below is a short blurb from the region's website.

Orientation to Cave Rescue (OCR)

An introductory level program which consists of classroom and field work in all phases of cave rescue including: underground environment, extrication techniques, communication systems, medical management, and organization and management of cave rescue. The basic orientation course material is presented for students who typically include cavers, emergency services personnel, and rescue management personnel.

The class will start Friday night 6-10pm, Sat. 9am-6pm, Sun. 9am-4pm. Breakfast snacks and drinks as well as lunch will be provided Sat. You must pack you lunch for Sunday.

P.S. I'm trying to get the flyer up on the website and should be up before this weekend.
