A WOMAN remains in a critical condition in hospital after falling from an unknown height into a cave in the state's South-East.

The woman, aged in her 30s, had to be winched from the Umpherston Cave near Mount Gambier after she fell just before 10.30pm on Thursday night.

Ambulance and CFS crews pulled the woman from the cave about 11pm.

The woman was taken to the Mount Gambier hospital but was later flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital by a medical retrieval team.

She received multiple fractures and was expected to need surgery.

In case you are wondering CFS are Country Fire Service South Australia's bushfire fighters, not cave rescue although the Mt Gambier area has a lot of caves so I'd be surprised if there wasn't some sort of cave rescue organisation or some other organisation responsible for cave rescues.
