Woman falls into lava tube during bathroom break

Sunday, October 23, 2005 9:25 AM HST

A 19-Year-Old Woman Was Taken To Hilo Medical Center After A Late-Night Bathroom Break Went Awry.

At 10:11 p.m. Friday, rangers and firefighters responded to a report of a person who had fallen into a lava hole about 25 or 30 feet deep on the Kilauea Military Camp grounds.

The woman was able to speak to rangers, who rapelled down to assess her condition. Firefighters and the ranger then brought her back to the surface, where she complained of left ankle pain.

A Fire Department statement said the lava hole was located off the Crater Rim Drive at the first entrance to KMC. The woman had gone over a barrier to relieve herself, where she fell into the hole.

Watch out indeed!

Several years ago a group of non-cavers were camping in the Hoosier Nat'l Forest near a popular rappeling spot. A young lady from the group had to pee and decided to walk some distance into the trees. I can only assume she did not have a light because she literally walked off the lip of a 70+ foot drop. She did not survive the fall

bathroom break

We recently had a similar incident. Of course Alcohol was involved when a group of partiers went to a local drop called Bear rock in which you walk down a trail onto this rock projection with a 50 foot drop on 3 sides. She decides do take her break by dropping her pants and backing up to the drop. When she tried to squat, she lost her balance. Fractured femur. When one her friends went to her rescue, he lost it. C-spine.

The edge is a real bit*h anyway, the first victim got hung on the lip, so I had to re-position the leg (yes she screamed in my ear). So we decided to bring the second vic up with vertical orientation. He also edged and we caved in the side of the litter.

That was a costly bathroom break.
