RADCLIFF, Ky. - It took nearly four hours, but a 28-month-old Belgain workhorse that fell into a cave was rescued with the help of a veteranarian and a crane.
Owner Charlie Ray says his horse, "Ruby," had been grazing on his Hardin County farm yesterday when she lost her footing and tumbled backward into the 28-foot deep hole.
Veterinarian Chad Bailey of Elizabethtown was lowered into the cave and gave Ruby two shots, a muscle relaxer and anesthesia to make "Ruby" unconscious for some 30 minutes.
With Ruby sedated, Radcliff Fire Chief Rick Ledford and others managed to tie safety belts around her. A crane lifted her sideways to work through the sharp angles of the cave and she was brought to ther surface at 5:30 in the afternoon.
Except for being groggy and muddy, Ruby was declared in excellent condition after the ordeal.
