Caving and Wilderness First Aid

Postby cavedoc » Oct 19, 2011 12:03 am

I wanted to point out a novelty in the 2012 NCRC seminar in Mentone. This year we will offer an experimental level called Caving and Wilderness First Aid. It is taught as a Level 2 refresher and will renew your eligibility to take level 3. It includes a two day wilderness first aid course and a half day psychological first aid course and along with some extras like suspension trauma, more advanced hypothermia care, and more advanced packaging techniques. It also includes a review of level 2 rigging techniques. Field exercises will emphasize packaging and patient care besides rigging. It will be a great class for someone who wants to add some tools to the tool box and has already done the core classes or wants to practice a little before doing level 3. It will be great preparation for anyone wanting to be an expedition leader. Students will work within the group for most of the week and then rejoin everyone else for the walk through and the mock.

I have to say, this looks like it could be a great class.

I'm actually mentioning it in our OCR this weekend.

I hope you get a great turn-out.

The problem is that every instructor who's heard about it said "I want to take that class!" So we may end up with a lack of instructors for other levels :big grin:

Nah. There's a big difference between, "I want to TAKE that class" and "I'm willing to PAY to take that class."

Though, in a truly capitalistic world, I'm sure Roger could take competitive bids for instructors willing to teach.

This'll put the other lead instructors in the position of having to bid to make sure they'll get enough instructors to help them teach.

This class is for medical weenies. :-)

If you're not overly fond of blood & gore, come take the TOFE class and spend every day solving realistic cave rescue problems and scenarios in the field. Plus, there is no (and I mean no) PowerPoint whatsoever! Can't beat that with a stick! Be there or be square!

Ah yes, The TOFE students will get you out with much more elegant rigging, but if one of our students is along, she'll fix you in the field and you can walk out. :boxing:
