NCRC weeklong 2011

Postby caverdoc » Dec 3, 2010 10:53 pm

I just finished registering, anybody else going? Will have to have my sister-in-law start the airline searching. Anybody planning on renting a car while there?

I've volunteered to teach the level 1/2 "medical" topics, but told Steve I'd undertake whatever needed an instructor.

I'd like to make the 2011 weeklong my first trip to PR, but it's going be difficult for me geographically/logistically.

So for now I'm in the "maybe" category.

Hopefully my "planning cell" will get the transpo details in order. For me the challenge will be what to take, or rather, not taking TOO MUCH. I think I'll just stick with the registration packet packing list. Plus laptop. And laser pointer...

Will be my first trip to the Caribbean. If I can pull off "distance caving" twice on Vancouver Island BC then this should not be too bad; certainly not as much clothing needed as BC.

I've already accumulated a set of never-been-underground gear, obviating the white-nose problem.

I am most likely going, but have to get Steve to fix my login first. ;-)

Logistically it'll be a pain (and expensive).

It also falls during the start of Passover. Anyone else celebrate?

Have fun in Puerto Rico, I will not be at the Weeklong this year.
I hope to take SPRAT training this year instead.

I want to go at some point. That's a lot of money to get down there though! Also, I think I want to get better at caving (my climbing confidence has improved, but still not great) and be trained in vertical first before taking rescue courses.

Good plan. You might consider attending a weekend Orientation to Cave Rescue training as the first step. These occur periodically in various places around the US. They are cheap, and usually don't require vertical skills. If there isn't any training scheduled in your region but folks are interested, get in touch with your NCRC regional coordinator and ask about setting something up. That's what they get paid (nothing) for. :big grin:

ohhey thanks NZCaver! Yeah, I figure first I want to be okay with getting myself in and out of caves before I worry about learning to help people who are injured and can't.

I'd like to go but can't afford it :sadbanana: .

Can the info for regional courses be found online or do I have to email the regional director?

I am all signed up. :banana_yay:

Question, why do they charge $100 for the NSS membership when you can pay much much less at the NSS website?

Sorry, :off topic: :shhh:

The surcharge over the normal NSS membership fee will go to the budget of that specific seminar as additional income or to offset other cost as needed.

NCRC is chartered by the National Speleological Society and as a commission of the NSS, those trained under it's banner should have some affiliation with that parent organization. So bottom line, join the NSS before the deadline for the Seminar and save some $$.

The cost for the seminar with airfare is noticeable. There is however a $300 scholarship available. See below for details.

Thanks for posting the scholarship info. I can't scrape up the money to cover airfare even if I did win it, but it might be a huge help to others. I passed it along on the caving Yahoo group I belong to--hope that's ok.
