Rescue in Logan Canyon, Utah

Postby Ernie Coffman » Nov 7, 2010 11:56 am

Maybe Caverdale can fill us in on this article, but apparently a rope was tied around a rock which gave way and plunged down on top of this caver, who suffered a broken arm and other injuries. Ouch! :yikes: Lucky to be alive. http://news.hjnews.com/news/local_news/ ... 002e0.html

from the article . . .

Cache County Search and Rescue members had trained in the same cave two weeks earlier and, according to Jensen, knew exactly where the victim was located when they received the call.

“They knew right where to go and right where to find him and the best way to get him out,” said Jensen.

Nice that they did some training, probably made a big difference. Congratulations to whoever arranged that. Anyone know if NCRC was involved?

Nothing has appeared in the local (Salt Lake City) papers so this is the first I've heard about it. The sinkhole leading to Canteen Cave is visible from the highway and has a lot of traffic. The Cache County S & R has trained in cave rescue with the Utah Cave Search & Rescue a number of years ago, but don't know if that included present Cache Co. S & R members. This would be a straight-forward carry out rescue. No NCRC would have been involved, AFAIK. From the description, I can't tell where the injured man was or why he was climbing the wall. The name does not ring a bell with any of the known cavers in the area. The "150" feet in may be exaggerated.

Ive been in this cave a few times. I whent in just after the accident with one of the members of the Cache County S&R. He told us all about how it happened and showed us where he was when the rock fell on him. I think we even saw some of his blood.
