A caver rescued in MASS cave

Here's a link and video to share about an experienced woman caver being trapped in a MASS cave yesterday.

LEVERETT, Mass. (WWLP) - 25-year-old Maya Hirch is safe and resting after being stuck inside a cave in Leverett for more than 12 hours.

Chief Terry Dun of the Franklin County Incident Command told 22News firefighters from several local departments were finally able to get the woman out of the cave after 1:00 Tuesday morning.

Dunn told 22News that around 1:00 Monday afternoon, the woman had become trapped after exploring the cave along with some others. Her companions tried to rescue her, but they were not successful, and firefighters were not alerted about the situation until about five hours later.

The video says she was trapped for 17 hours, and it was 5 hours before her companions called the fire dept. No word on if local cave rescue resources were requested or even contacted at any point during the rescue.

Argh, when will people learn not to wait so long for a stuck caver? Fortunately everything turned out all right.
