The reports are still sketchy. It seems they haven't identified the bodies and/or notified the family, so there aren't any names released and we don't know if they were trained cave divers or not.

FYI, School Sink, aka Wayne's World is managed by the NSS/CDS. Here a bit of info from the CDS webpage:

The NSS-CDS as part of a joint partnership with Pasco County Schools System purchased School Sink in 2004. The purchase was for approximately four and one-half acres, of which the NSS-CDS acquired one acre with the remaining going to Pasco County.

School Sink is an advanced cave dive with low visibility, depths to 160 feet, and varying flows due to tidal influence. School Sink is considered an advanced cave dive and the access policy is written with this in mind.

Always a shame, my thoughts go out to their families.

just about all cave diving deaths violate at least one of the 5 basic 'guidelines' to cave diving, in this case I hear that it was training. Neither diver was trained for this advanced dive. It's a shame, one of them was a Lt. Col in the USMC.

From what is being said on the scuba boards, these 2 were in way over their heads. Sounds like only one had very limited cave training. What a shame.

A follow-up to Two deaths at School Sink

Postby Ernie Coffman » Jan 30, 2009 12:01 pm

In today's paper, there was a follow-up to the November deaths of two guys down in Florida. The link:

Sad to read where some divers...and cavers, too, feel that they can do anything without limitations, especially when they say that "There's no scuba police.'" Some folks just learn the hard way, but...it's the families that suffer afterward...considering this article that lays it on the line.

That is a very well written piece in the Ft Mills Times. Chilling, too. What arrogance. And how sad for the families.
