Hard to tell from the picture, and not really knowing the area. Are sink holes common to this region? Does this freeze during the winter?

One way to find out short of diving is to drop in a thermometer. In our region surface water maybe warmer, but once ground water is reached it will be at the consistent temperature for ground water in the region. I've known of some people who use infrared film during the winter because springs and sinks will show up as hot spots compared to the surrounding terrain.

That's a picture of a tarn. It's a lake in a glacially carved bowl called a cirque. It's typical of them to have a berm at the downhill end which forms a natural dam which holds the water in the tarn.

Beautiful!

well thank you for the replies after looking at this picture and considering the glaciation in the past i can see it for what it is, though i must say sinkholes do dot the southwest but this particular area i do not think is populated by many sinks
