Report on Mexico Rebreather Fatality
Michael Angelo Gagliardi

Our good friend and colleague, Michael Angelo Gagliardi has posted this first-hand report on the tragic loss of Brendan Lee Napier, during an explorartion dive in Cozumel.

Report on accident at Sisteme Cocodrilo
I am writing this today as a chosen representative of the Cocodrilo/Dos Coronas Exploration and Mapping Expedition. On Sun October 16 we had a member of our team (Brendan Lee Nappier) die during a survey dive in the Sisteme Cocodrilo System on the island of Cozumel. The team has asked me to post this report to prevent and dispel any misinformation or misconceptions of this tragic accident.

Bad air. What a bummer. I was on Spring Break in college when two guys succumbed to bad air at Morrison Springs in Florida in 1989.

Bad air? Does this not border on criminal? You just don't get bad air accidentally. What are they doing, filling these tanks straight from a car's exhaust pipe?

I was told that in Mexico, it the only basis for a criminal suit is if they KNOWING sold contaminated gas. If it's accidental, there's the possibility for a civil suit.

well we already knew the hazards of buying rope in Mexico, looks like buying air there is a dicey proposition too :yikes:

Or, in this case, nitrox. Bad gas can happen anywhere. Best to buy an analyzer and know for sure, each and every time.

I mix my own gasses with my own compressor, and solo on the stuff, so I've been checking each and every cylinder for O2 and CO for years.
