Utah Caving Legend John Forsberg Lyon 1930 ~ 2009

Postby Ralph E. Powers » Oct 18, 2009 8:06 pm

From message board (that I own)...
I saw in the newspaper this morning that our friend and caver John Lyon passed away October 15, 2009.
For those interested, there will be a viewing tomorrow from 6 until 8 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial
Mortuary 3115 E. 7800 S. Funeral services will be on Tuesday at the Cottonwood Heights 2nd Ward Chapel
6890 S. 2225 E. in Cottonwood Heights. I for one will miss John deeply. Whether or not you ever caved
with him, his shadow lingers over Utah caving like the sky over the earth. We all should be grateful for
his leadership and his example in all walks of life.
Richard Downey, Timpanogos Grotto Sec./Treas.

I've personally have had the pleasure of knowing John who was already a legend by then with his joint discoveries of some of Utah's major caves, including Neffs Canyon Cave (-1165 feet) which was initially referred to as Lyon's Den.
I chatted with John a few times during Grotto meetings and grotto gatherings that he attended. I can't rightly recall if I've ever gone underground with him.
Of the conversations I've had with the man, he was pleasant and had more than several amusing anecdotes related to caves and cavers in the state.
Prayers go to his family for comfort and succor at this time.
He will be sorely missed by the Utah caving community and by those who knew him well.
Without the possibility of death, adventure is not possible. ~ Reinhold Messner
