WNS in KY Rumor

Postby Scott McCrea » Mar 26, 2010 6:19 pm

Here's a pure rumor, but it does come from a trustworthy source. On a regional email list, it was reported that WNS has been confirmed in KY in the Land Between The Lakes region. That all the info that was posted. Pure rumor but not that far-fetched.

No, not far fetched at all since Clarksville, TN is not real far from there. I noticed on driggs map that WNS was reported in Canada heading West too.
If WNS bats or spores was wind blown from the upper NE by those big storms this winter, then WNS and/or infected bats could be found anywhere along the path
those storms took. That would not be good as that would extend the disease hundreds of miles to the West and South from where it has been found
in the past, via The Translocation Vector, per CDC research paper.

It could also be a geometric progression of the syndrome.

its highly likely that WNS was in canada earlier, and is just now being reported. The east-west movement there is probably as much a function of available above freezing habitat as anything...

I was told of the KY Land Between the Lakes possibility by a USFWS employee, but he later told me that the information he got was apparently in reference to Dunbar Cave (Clarksville), and not Kentucky. If this is what was circulating, then it's only a rumor. While it may only be a matter of time for Kentucky, I believe this is not accurate at this time.

Just got word from the same source that this was indeed a rumor. The cave in question was Dunbar. KY is clean, so far.
