I digress

I must revise this statement, as I see a study is underway to determine what I had considered a root cause some time ago, and felt it was not considered scientifically We will need some time to see where this goes.
My theory is this. Mammalian skin is susceptible to many types of infection and scourge if not protected by good bacteria. It is possible that this good bacteria may have been compromised by some infectious so called bad bacteria. Bad bacteria could allow Gd to infiltrate the skin of bats and therefore fungal growth. This study will give some relevant to infected as well as non-infected bats bacterial counts. Could Gd have been here all along and just not progressed?. Could an infectious bacteria be the real cause of WNS? We will see!

sounds to me like you are parsing something that makes no difference whether you parse it or not.

You're saying Gd was always here and that something ELSE is invasive. So far this so called "bad bacteria" as you suggested is limited to bats... why? Because you are suggesting a common link between mammals and I'm not following.

Listen cavers, If we don't get together on this issue and start demanding that caves be open since there is absolutely no proof that humans are spreading WNS, we will be eternally *******! I know that some of you just can't make it through the day without contradicting someones ideas, but you will need to get over it NOW!

I'm right behind you. And once a region has been totally inundated with the fungus, what difference does it make if you decon or not, if you are staying only in your region? You ain't spreading anything around that is already there!

The NSS needs to begin re-opening their cave preserves with access policies that clearly define decontamination/cleaning of gear.
It's very hypocritical for the NSS to keep cave preserves closed because they are worried about a human transmission vector, when we (cavers & NSS members) are lobbying to keep caves open.

This is the (enlightened) position taken by the VA Dept of Rec and Conservation, thanks to cavers who work in the dept advising the government, and the VA Cave Board. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural_her ... _12_10.pdf

If reading this http://www.batcon.org/pdfs/whitenose/WNS2FinalReport.pdf correctly, It explains that the mode of transmission is first on every list in terms of necessity of grant research. Where did this need fall apart?

Just getting more and more amazed at what is happening and why our caves are staying closed. I'm not sure that any research in this area has even begun yet?

I was really hoping that someone would respond to the validity of this?

I am eagerly waiting , since the weather has warmed up, and the bug supply is getting plentiful, at least in the south, for the US government bat police to issue a decree any day, lifting the closure of caves and mines on all properties, both federal and state, as well as those on private property that they were able to bully into cooperating. All of you guys get your caving gear all shined up and ready. If any of you still think this is all about bat welfare, please disregard an old man whose brain may have been damaged by too much Radon exposure. I am old enough to remember the good old days of caving on federal lands that the taxpayers used to own. Caution, this is not a politically correct posting!

It has been almost five years now, does any one know if cavers spread WNS? Millions of dollars have been spent closing caves, but nothing has been used to determine how WNS spreads? What's up?

All those gated caves have proved one thing BrianC. That bats spread WNS to each other.

Hey, Brian,

I forgot you aren't an NSS member, so wouldn't have read the article in the NSS News April Conservation issue. I wrote a lengthy piece on various aspects of the WNS issue, including details on research. I suggest you check out the section on transmission - especially Hazel Barton's current project. We posted the article on the NSS' WNS Web site:
