USFWS finds ESA listing warranted for MYSE

Postby PYoungbaer » Oct 3, 2013 8:57 am

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has issued a finding in support of adding the Northern Long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) to the federal Endangered Species list. At the same time, they found that the Eastern Small-footed bat (Myotis leibii) was not warranted.

There is a public comment period (60 days - deadline Dec. 2) and a short time in which to request a public hearing (45 days - Nov. 15). The full notice appeared in the Federal Register, and can be found here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-10-02/pdf/2013-23753.pdf. The Federal Register posting provides a wealth of information about these bats, their habitat, and the rationale behind their listing determinations.

Peer Review will occur, and substantive comments as to why their findings should or should not be supported should be submitted. A simple "yes" or "no" isn't considered substantive. The Federal Register provides a detailed list of the kind of information they are seeking.
