"The Center for Biological Diversity's petition asks the White House to ... enact consistent regulations limiting human entry to caves on public lands in order to prevent spread of the disease to the western United States and other areas. Those steps are needed because white-nose syndrome has been found to be caused by a newly described fungus, aptly named Geomyces destructans, that is easily carried on the shoes, clothes or gear of any person visiting contaminated caves and is very likely being spread by people. Indeed, all evidence indicates that the disease was recently and inadvertently introduced to North America by a cave visitor on both continents."

I love how their article now says 7 million bats have died. I guess by their science another million and a half bats have died since the FWS announcement. There are less facts used in WNS research and press releases then there are in your local opinion section of your news paper.

I know how I'm going to vote in the next election. And it isn't for the one who is obviously overzealous concerning so called environmental issues. IN MHO of course.

I sincerely feel all of your pain, but it is way to late to worry about it! There will be no changing the minds of the USFWS, and it has been set in stone anyway. The best we can hope is that private caves are left alone and the ESA doesn't get their way. If WNS hits quickly, and gets where it is going, then maybe the worst will be over in about 30 years. We know that humans are not spreading it, but we could bring infected bats to areas quicker than they are getting there whereas the problem could get around quicker, and over quicker! Just kidding of course. The CBD has said that we are spreading WNS though.

If everyone gives up, it is over. I know lots of "cavers" who have given up. Most gave up because they did nothing from the start. Peter Youngbaer has
not given up. He is setting the example.

Waving the white flag At least I can still make an example of how not to allow the USFWS make critical action decisions, but sorry folks, this has been over for some time.

I have to agree with Brian to an extent. I stop short of waving the white flag and I will never give up all hope but realistically it looks like recreational caving will be on private property only at least for quite a while.

We have ourselves to blame. The lack of a unified voice for cavers in the beginning was our downfall but I cannot blame everyone since in the beginning we did not know much about WNS. All we can hope for is to learn from our mistakes and not make them again. The NSS failed its members (at least in the beginning) and cavers themselves drove each other apart with differing views which severely damaged our public image.
