WNS on the Diane Rehm show: Monday Nov 7 @11:06am

Postby Tim Williams » Nov 2, 2011 6:38 am

The Diane Rehm show will be discussing WNS on Monday 7th November at 11:06am

Any chance that we can get an NSS representative to call in to the discussion?

I'm sure Peter will see this.

Cheryl Jones replied to me earlier that her calendar is marked and that she'll also post it on various list-serves once we get closer to the 7th.

Someone should contact the show ahead of time (time is running short) to let them know we have an "expert" (or someone relevant to speak).

Peter has seen it, but is unavailable. I'm not familiar with the show. If it's a call-in, I hope folks will listen and make calls, as appropriate. For some NSS/WNS talking points, check out the NSS and WNS white paper at: http://www.caves.org/WNS/The%20NSS%20and%20WNS%20final.pdf

If Peter is unavailable, I think that Dean should contact this show in advance and try to get on as an expert since he can speak as an elected official, Biologist and a caver.

I don't think that more than 1.5% on here actually think the way that I do. So, your selection would get more than 50 % affiliation in agreement. But I have made the offer!

Peter has someone ready, willing, and most importantly ABLE to represent us.

Totally agree... If it isn't Peter, then it should be someone with a deeper WNS pedigree than me. This talk is going to be less about cave access/management than it is about the bats, themselves. There's already someone on the panel with whom Peter has conferred.

Ok, so I forgot to turn this on until now. It's 2/3 done, but they've just opened up to calls. I'll post the link to the show when the archive goes up in a little over an hour.

David Blehert is obviously very biased with his observation of the possibility of humans being the only real way that Gd could have traveled here from the European bat, and that humans can also re spread it to other areas easier than bats.

Hmmm! Does he seem like a rubber roomer to any one else?

I listened as the 22 billion dollar estimate of additional insecticidal and environmental issues was brought up again. Does anyone realize that that number would reflect only studies of the South American bats, and in no way the potential WNS region? Pure unsolicited speculation at best.

Other than the program giving a great education on bats, it didn't give current or even real data about where we are with the disease. Again, it appears that they are only looking for more money and not giving the real story to get it.

Dan Ash? Did a great job of taking some blame away from humans, but not nearly enough because current information was not realized into the equation. :argue:

There's a little "listen" button in the upper left.
