Agreement may mean protection for vulnerable species

Two bats and a bunny: Three vulnerable species that make Connecticut home are on their way to protection.

A federal judge recently approved an agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Center for Biological Diversity of Tucson, Ariz., which may lead to federal protections for up to 757 species of plants and animals.

Three of them include Connecticut in their historic range: the Eastern small-footed bat and Northern long-eared bat, both threatened by a fungus known as white-nose syndrome, and the New England cottontail rabbit.

My two fav animals! =( I didn't know there was a New England cottontail specifically. Interestingy enough, domestic rabbits are all descended from the wild European rabbit which is a totally separate species from the wild rabbits we have here. I love the long eared bats though I think they are adorable.

I thought this thread was going to go on as, "Two bats and a bunny walk into a bar, and the bartender says..."

The two bat species - Eastern small-footed and Northern long-eared are scheduled to be reviewed in 2013 under the judicially-approved agreement. Doesn't mean they will be proposed for listing, but the next step under the Endangered Species Act would be completed by then under terms of the agreement.

So two bats and a bunny walk into a bar and order a round of beers. The bartender sets them up, and says, "That'll be $24, guys." The bunny pays the tab, and the bartender says, "I don't get a lot of customers like you guys in here, you know?" The bunny says, "At eight bucks for a beer, I'm not surprised."
