4000 WNS sites in Pennsylvania

Postby dfcaver » Jan 7, 2011 12:51 pm

Last winter, two-thirds of Pennsylvania's more than 2,000 caves and 4,000 abandoned mines were affected by white nose syndrome, Turner said. This winter, game officials expect that "all the sites we know of will have white nose," Turner said.

Wow. The "official" WNS map (typically credited to the PA PGC) does not show this type of infection rate so I guess officials are doing some projecting of data to arrive at these numbers. Most recent counts have about 17 of 67 counties as positive. Given the staff size winthin the PGC that deals with WNS, it's just not possible to have checked thousands of sites. Regardless, the implications are horrific.
