To solve the logistical problem posed by the Crawlway, John Spence
undertook the development of a metal canister for transporting supplies.
He and Russ Gurnee designed and built four canisters for use in the Crawl-
way. Working in Gurnee's sheet-metal shop, they placed a metal cone on the
forward end of the tapered, galvanized steel cylinder. It could be dragged
by a rope tied to a ring at the point of the cone and would not snag. A
canvas cover closed the rear end after it was loaded.

I believe that a Gurnee Can was sold at the 1972 NSS auction in White Salmon, WA. I don't remember what it went for or who bought it but maybe someone else that was there can.

Two Gurnee Cans were auctioned at the '07 Convention in Marengo, IN. One went for, IIRC, over $500. The other went for a little less. I was out of the bidding at $10.00.

A little over a decade ago I had the privilege of transporting a Gurnee Can (courtesy of Jeanne Gurnee) to the NSS Museum.


At the time I was told that this was likely one of the replacement Gurnee cans fabricated during the C3 expedition. This may explain the absolutely wonderful condition it was in compared to some of the other ones.
