Good advice, stridergdm...

OR you can wear kneepads and do it the wimpy way...

Not a very flattering photo, I know. Rappelling over that edge was just as challenging as getting back up - which this shot shows. It can be tough to negotiate a skylight, particularly the first time when all the loose rock needs to be cleaned off.

Fun!

When I have more time, I'll post up about my fear of height and what it's like and how I've dealt with it (or *didn't* deal with it).

But in response to that last post, I will say that it's easier in a cave where it's dark. You can't see all that scary downness. Yes, you know it's down, and the tiny pinprick of light so far away tells you it's far, but you just don't see it like you do in daylight.

But you know..... when you're cave diving, all you have to do is put a little air in your BC, or let a little out. Soooooo easy!

Cave diving sounds like fun -- actually, any diving sounds like fun. I bet it's hard to get used to breathing underwater.

Only the first couple of times or so. The weirdest thing about one of my first cave dives was seeing fish swimming by me at eye level in a cave!

Ha, I bet that was weird.

Have you seen Abyss? They have this crazy liquid that you can breathe into your lungs and don't need an air tank.

Ah-yup. My better side.

:scuba: Can't say the idea of cave diving does anything for me, though. I hear it takes a special kind of crazy to do that...

Well, my wife has made it clear that if I take up cave diving she'd kill me. So, I'll let others handle that.

On a different note, yes, being in a cave on rappel sometimes is easier. Not sure if I prefer being the 1st down or not. 1st down you don't necessarily have an idea of how far to the bottom it is. But with others down there you can see exactly how far away their lights are.

I have come to the conclusion though that being 100' up on a rope ascending is perhaps the most "alone" I've ever been. I've got to write something up on that someday.

awww that's so sweet...you think I'm special

i was a cave diver before a 'dry' caver... so now when i am 'dry' caving and climbing over breakdown i think , hmmm if this cave was full of water i could just float over all thsi stuff, but then when I am 'dry' caving i think, wow this would be a cool cave dive.

Although I have been a cave diver (why???) I remember a quote that may have come from a Brit:

"A sump is God's way of saying 'The cave ends here!'" :)
