If had been down a chimney, would this have made the ACA cave-related accidents?

No, but it probably would have made the Darwin Awards. (And there's apparently a few cases of that happening.)

From personal experience, I've found it safer and easier to lower the bearded fat guy using a descender anchored at the top.

Just my 2 cents.

I love this part:
but about halfway down, his long beard got stuck in the rigging.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt...

Well it'll only hurt if it's real.
But ya gotta figgure that shows not a whole lot of experience as he should've known that any loose clothing or long hair (including beard... fake or no) would have a high chance of getting entangled in the rigging.
Sigh... prolly had a good idea just poor execution.

Didn't this happen last year around this time? Me thinks that Santa should practice his SRT move than once a year :nono: :kidding:

The article says the guy doing it was a proffesional rock climber, I would have though a proffesional climber might know better??? or be able to extracate himself, prepare for the possibility of stuck beards?
I guess if your wearing a fake beard then the first thought might not be "this is gonna get caught in my descender..."
