Exactly.
If you are not familiar with YOUR device and its quirks, you've no business using it. SAFETY is a state of mind, not a set of rules or recommended procedures. Some devices are more forgiving than others, but that does not excuse the user from learning their traits. When you take your life in your hands by abseiling you take your LIFE in YOUR hands. Period.
