OR1 Ultimate Rack

Postby Carl Amundson » Sep 25, 2007 1:11 pm

I was asked to start a new thread for this so here it is:

Has anyone tried the OR1 Ultimate Rack from On Rope?
I like the hyper bar and the tubular steel bars, but it is kind of expensive.

How does this rack compare the SMC rack?

Do the tubular steel bars disperse heat better or worse then the standard SMS bars?

Also the site does not state how long the rack is.

Added a link to the rack on On Rope 1's website:

The OR1 Ultimate Rack is a 14" standard length 6-bar frame (same as SMC). The big difference are the tubular stainless steel bars. The BMS bars are offset which produces less radius (bend in the rope). Some say better control.

I noticed the offset bars and was wondering about that.
So the OR1 Ultimate Rack uses BMS bars?

One more question...
With the hyper bar and round bars, it looks like you could lock off this rack the same way you lock off a micro-rack.
Is this a correct statement?

Tim, don't the offset bars produce more bend than non-offset?

Looking at this picture you are correct.
It will bend the rope more

 Got me on that one.... I don't own one and at the time was thinking that they were offset on the other side.

 Guess I'd better make sure that I know what I'm talking about before I post something (if I want to keep my "job"). :tonguecheek:

But some still say "better control".

OK, is there anyone out there that has used one of these and can give me some feedback.
Currently I only have a long micro-rack and want to purchase a standard rack for longer drops (although I have used my micro rack for drops up to 230').
I like the fact that I can use a micro-rack style lock-off, but I'm wondering what other advantages/disadvantages this rack has as opposed to a standard SMC rack.

Dude, the "job" I think Tim is referring to doesn't pay very well. In fact, it doesn't pay ANYTHING!

Now that's committment!

NZ, I don’t think it’s “commitment”, rather I need to be committed. :panic:

On the topic, I thought sure you would have a OR1 rack...Mr. Gear-Head #1.
 Oh, I forgot...you probably don't use a 6-bar rack. :boxing:

hmmm not a physics major and I suck at math, but the picture would seem to imply that while the "S" bend of the rope might be bigger on an offset, it would be a "lazier" "S" (not as tight) and thus might be easier on the rope fibers? It also seems like that configuration puts more rope length against the bars thus maybe the reason for more control but also more heat?

Also a note on heat and hollow bars from my experiance, hollow bars would lose heat faster but they dont have as much capacity to store heat as a solid bar. They also dont lose it as fast as they get it from the rope! My hollow bar racks get much hotter on a given rappel than my solid. But, they are lighter and I always can use a little water on long "hot" rappels. It also makes a big difference if your using aluminum or stainless.
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)

Far be it for me to suggest you need to be committed, but since you opened that door... :tonguecheek:

Hmmm... actually I think I do have a 6-bar rack somewhere.
I played with it once, then tucked it away in a box marked "open only if someone asks for a history lesson." :boxing: :kidding:
