What is the smallest, lightest locking carabiner?

Postby Lava » Sep 5, 2007 2:40 pm

What is the smallest, lightest locking carabiner you know of? I'm talking about legit life-supporting carabiners, not accessory biners.

So far the best I can find is the Trango Superfly Screwlock at 41g. Anybody know of anything lighter?

I don't know their name, but I've got some that are pretty small, pretty thin, and very funny shaped. They're designed for aide climbing, and they stay open (the gate sticks on a thin strip of rubber on the opposite side of the interior) when you open them.

They're real carabiners, but the only problem is that I scared to use them.

I know the lightest carabiner is the Camp Nano at 1oz = 28g http://tinyurl.com/2e5um5:

I think you are on the right track with the Trango, I looked around and couldn't find anything lighter than 41g.

I don't know what application you are using it for but there is also the 3mm Titanium Quick link by Berkeley point http://tinyurl.com/3x5mpn

Hey Evan, is there a way to get strength ratings for the stuff on that website? I tinkered but couldn't find one.

I have a couple of the superfly lockers and like them. I wouldn't use them for belaying or as a breaking biner though. They are thin enough they will wear out a good bit more quickly.

I also have ten or fifteen of the Camp Nano biners. I like them but I've seen a lot of people struggle with clipping them quickly (climbing not caving).

Camp nano:

Weight 28g (0.95oz)
Major Axis 22kN
Minor Axis 10kN
Open Gate 9kN

As for the 3mm Titanium Quick link, I don't the breaking strength nor could I find it. Maybe there is a project in it for someone?

Not exactly a locking carabiner, but the Petzl Speedy is 23gm, has a strength of 15kn along the major axis.

Just popped to mind because I'm going through my bolting stuff and finally found a bunch of my Speedy's!

I have a couple of Climb High locking screwgate carabiners which are really small and light - but probably not quite as slim as the Trango. I can't find their specs anywhere on line, and the biners themselves are buried in a pile of gear at the moment.

I also have one of those nice Camp Nano wiregates. Works well connecting the safety to the upper ascender in my frog system.
