Rack lockoffs

Postby brrrdog » Aug 15, 2007 9:54 am

I was just looking for an alternative to the overhand that petzl recommends and ran across this...

Seemed like a good piece of reference so I thought I'd post it.

that's strange. I tried to make the link work live and it wouldn't work for me either. You can copy/paste the url into your browser and it works. The [url] buttons don't seem to work here for some reason.

I edited brrrdog's post and made the url into a TinyURL link. It is a link to a PDF download.

Good report there brrrdog, thanks for posting.

Thanks for sharing. Good info. :kewl:

Here's a link to the web page that contains the file: LINK. Scroll down to the "Search & Rescue (SAR) Publications" section. The file is called "Brake Rack Report.pdf (0.98 MB)"

Thanks for the link.
I have never seen these types of lock-off's for a U-bar rack.
They seem like over kill to me. I will play around with the “Cleat” around hyper bar and see how it works.

The lock-off I currently use is this:

It's simple and works very well.

A lot of those tie off methods seem to use a lot of rope to tie off with (over 1m) it's not so important if you have a straight drop but if there is a rebelay below you there may not be that much rope available and this could prevent you locking off. To my mind the method for tying off needs to deal with this in which case only three of the methods shown are suitable.

I'd disagree that number 9 can't be used on U frame racks without a hyper bar, we can and do use it on our U frame racks none of which have any hyperbars.

short tie-offs

Postby brrrdog » Aug 17, 2007 9:40 am

I think the only one on there that was under a meter for a standard J rack was the double half hitch. Unfortuantely, that tie off doesn't work well with my petzl rack - the short leg is too short. Is there an alternative? I suppose it wouldn't be any different than a heavy or loaded rope below you - use a QAS instead?
