What lengths would be best?

Postby Ralph E. Powers » Oct 20, 2005 11:47 pm

I have 600+ feet of PMI Maxi-wear a-coming to me on a spool by next weekend.
The first thing I plan on doing with it is to drop this 710' mineshaft we know about (yes, adding another rope to get to the bottom  ) then cutting it to whatever lengths.
I know I want at least one 300'er for some of the deep caves (entrances) we have here, but with the remaining lengths I'm kinda in a toss up to cut a 200' and a 100' but since I train a lot of (beginner) cavers am thinking perhaps 3-100'ers would be better. I dunno. We've a pit that we practice at that allows for multiple rig points around the circumfrence. <shrugs> Just wondering what ya'll think or would do.

Ralph
I feel your pain.
Some years back I had a 1200' Highline rope. Cut it into a 600 and two 300's. Since then it's been cut several more times, since my project caves don't require really long ropes. Much of this rope was used in the 2001 mapping of Lost Creek Siphon, MT.
Definitely keep the 300' section. You might want to consider two 150's since this is a pretty standard caving rope length. You can always rig that training pit with the longer sections, and use the 300 to double rig it.
If it keeps you up at night, just send the rope to me

One of two things: inventory the caves nearby that you are most likely to do, then cut accordingly (if you are a TAG pit-basher, this is probably easier than if you do multidrops). Or, cut the rope as you need it over time.

Our club provides ropes to its members, so our rope-cutting startegy is different because we have a large inventory, but we basically do the same (a combination of the two).

Our deepest is 256m (840ft) and our club has a rope reserved for that, tho we often think of cutting it...

Most of the caves I do, I am limited to the depth becuse of my 300' rope I own. Anything up to 230' deep, a 300' rope is good to have around, depending on how you rig the pit.

There is three multi-drop caves that I have done, where we used a 300' rope to rig the first 2 drops in the cave.

Generally, rope lengths that are good to have around is:
300'
160'
200'
100'
2- 150'
70'
50'
125'

And if you come to TAG, a 700' rope is good to have for Surprize and Fantastic Pits.

I'd stick with the two pieces. 200' and 100'. The 200' could always be rigged as two seperate ropes during training. But you can't put it back together once the cut is made. The 300', 200', and 100' lenghts, would be my preference.
