My personal first choice for checking out leads 15 to 20 feet above the cave floor is to use an aluminum ladder.

However, I have to admit there are limitations on how far you can carry the thing into the cave.

Second what George said. Maybe it's not at all possible in these cases but considering the effort required to construct a pole or put in bolts, using a standard 2 part ladder or a collapsable one is sometimes a nice option. I've also had good luck attaching a ladder part way up a wall to avoid breaking formations.
