Interesting that all the videos show the person on belay. I wonder what the failure rate is?

Still, pretty cool.

:kewl: I'll try one!

I think these have been around for a couple of years. I recall seeing info on them back in 2005. The price tag is a bit steep, but maybe one day...

I'm thinking the lip would be like a ramp - you would just soar straight up!!!
Espcially if you fuel it (and yourself) as MRD suggests!
The info says it is good for 600 ft - meaning that with a new, freshly charged battery, you could "probably" get out of Fantastic......probably.
But my Bestest Caving Buddy already makes fun of me for doing drop-down, thru-trips - all rappel and no ascend - I would never hear the end of it if I got myself one of those contraptions!!!
But I tell you, it is mighty tempting for an old, bald-headed, fat guy!!!

A set of kneepads with built-in rollers, and you should be fine...

motorized ascender

At the British Columbia Cave Rescue camp this year a guy brought one of these to demonstrate. Unfortunately both of his batteries were pooped out so it wasn't a very impressive display. He rigged it as a fixed winch to lower and lift Phil Whitfield into one of the Gold River ravines.

That's pretty cool, but there are many concerns for caving.
battery life, getting over a lip and change-overs....
Still, I would love to try one someday.

Steve Hudson (PMI) did a demo of this unit at the 2005 TAG Fall Cave-In. Impressive.

He and Berta joked about a race, but decided that she would still be faster. No contest.
