cleaning muddy ropes,

easy do a very wet cave or leave them tied to a tree in a stream.

failing that use a proprietary rope washer.

I use a homemade ropewasher in a tub of water, that consists of a piece of pipe with a piece of rolled up doormat as bristles.

I have an extra large capacity top load washer. I loosely caver coil the rope to sit between the wall and agitator fins. A little woolite or ivory and its set. I have closely watched and in my case the rope rarely touches the agitors. Of course I also inspect it afterwards. This probably does not clean the rope as well as some other methods but it works. I also only machine wash my ropes about twice a year, with waterhose washings in between.
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)
