On Rope 1 "Lookout Harness"

Is this harness good for just about everything (pits, rock climbing, etc...)?

Good caving harnesses particularly if you are using a frog rig will have a low attachment point where as climbing and abseiling harnesses don't.
Climbing harnesses can be used for caving but they won't work quite as well and often won't be designed with caving in mind. ie a good caving harness will include abrasion protection around the leg loops, a low attachment point, the ability to feed straps back though buckles to protect against rub, leg loop buckles are in near the inner thigh to avoid rub, and the materials they are made with are tough.

Fuzzy is right, and if you look at this harness, it has a very high attachment loop. Not good for frogging at all. I think this harness is primarily for rope courses and summer-camp type climbing use. I would not get it to use for caving.

What ascending system do you use? If you're using a frog ascending system then t's not the best choice. If you are using some other type of ascending system then it should work just fine for vertical and rock climbing.

Who said he's using a frog? Not everyone is into humping the rope

Some of us like to glide up smoothly or use our old fashoined knots or even a Mitchell/Texas rig

Yeah, the assumption of using a Frog was probably a little presumptuous. Although it's understandable, considering something like 80% of the world's vertical cavers use the Frog system.

:omg: :lmao: ...sorry, just kidding! :tonguecheek:

Short answer - no. I agree with the previous comments about this harness having a lack of efficiency when used with a Frog system. It's really designed as a basic harness for groups doing rock climbing and ropes courses, as Joey mentioned.

Your initial question mentions bouncing pits and rock climbing. What climbing system do you intend using for caving? And for rock climbing, are you talking leading or top-roping? :?

A low-attachment (maillon) harness can be used safely and efficiently with any climbing system, whereas a rock climbing style harness can't. So to cover all caving options without multiple harnesses, I would say some type of maillon harness would be best. However - if you're going to regularly use the same harness for rock climbing (especially lead-climbing) then a maillon harness is NOT the best choice. You would probably do OK in one for top-roping, but you'll want something with a higher attachment point and more padding if you're going to be taking any significant falls.

Sorry, there really is no perfect answer without having more info on how you intend using this harness.

Probably a good guesstimate. To see what the numbers are here, check this out: http://www.caves.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1454
