Correct orientation of a locking carabiner on a 1/2 round

Postby Victor » Sep 24, 2005 3:23 pm

When attaching a locking carabiner to a half-round maillon should the
gate towards or away from you? I have seen gates screw open when in contact with a persons body. I always face the gate away and screw it down. Recently a more experienced vertical caver told me they had been taught to face the gate to the climber.
What is the correct orientation and why?

I learned that the locking carabiner should have its gate facing you. If the gate should come unscrewed, you wouldn't want to push it against a rock on a lip or something and let it come open. As far as which direction it should be screwed shut, I always remember "screw down so you don't screw up." If the gate is screwed shut such that it moves up when closing, your movement combined with gravity could unscrew your gate.

I always keep the gate toward me I like to see the gate and watch it make sure it is locked. I NEVER have a locking carabiner unlocked wile in use and never use nonlocking carabiners unless I have two opposing gates. ( but usually use non locking biners to attach extra gear to my gear loops and not for life Bearing situations

Matt Oliphant says the gate should face toward you. He's kind of written the American book on the Frog, so I trust him.
