Hi,

I'm new on the all ropewalkers thing, and I was wondering...why not put a simple small carabiner instead of roller to just keep your chest high and close to the rope and guide the rope through it?

Is it because of faster passing through roller? Or not damaging the carabiner by friction of the rope through it? Or something third?

A roller has less friction. Therefore, the climbing effort is easier using it rather then a 'biner.

Yup, friction. The roller goes up the rope easier. A lot easier. It makes a huge difference. Try it, you'll see.

A caribiner would also be quickly cut in half in that kind of aPplication. A roller is also as low profile as you can get. This keeps your upper body as close to the rope as possible. Which is the most efficient climbing positiOn.
