Howdy,

So, has anybody ever used tecnu to clean rope or webbing from poison ivy oils? Any opinions on whether that might be a bad idea? Other tips how to clean stuff?

Technu is great for skin. I'm not sure about rope. You can check the ingredients for anything harmful.

But you probably don't need anything beyond soap and water. The reason PI is so bad on skin is because the oil binds to the skin so quickly. But inanimate objects, I think they can be washed.

Maybe I'm making this up, but do you know how when bleach contacts skin, it turns fat to soap? But if you pour it on plastic or metal, it just washes right off because it doesn't bind to the inanimate material.

I just turned in my patent application for a "lose weight and save money on cleaning" program. Stock tip....buy Clorox!

Actually many oils can be removed by soaking in warm water as long as the item is kept submerged. Skim the film off the water and you are good to go. Now this is food for thought. Many soaps like Dawn dishwashing liquid break up oil BUT sink it. So Dawn like products remove the oil but take it to the bottom of the container where it may re deposit on the item being cleaned. This is an old commercial boat trick....dump Dawn or like products in the bilge and the water around your vessel has no sheen....because the oil in your bilge water being pumped overboard sinks rather than floats.

Unless I'm mistaken, what really does the work in Tecnu is a petrolium product. No problem for nylon ropes. FWIW I've washed myself, my clothes and my climbing ropes with the stuff. I'm not dead. It's just what you do when you have to remove a vine thats as big around as your thigh an whose rings you can actually count...;)

Oh yeah, and my dog too, and I'd take a whipper on him any day!
