Here's a video of Grivel (a climbing gear manufacturer) testing carabiners. You can see exactly how much they stretch, bend and flex and it still passes their specs. The flexing, stretching we are seeing when cavers are climing is nothing compared to these tests.

Here's another good video about carabiner production that shows breaking strength tests of a few 'biners at 6:20. Amazing how much they deform before they fail.
